Condition surveys and trials

(services)

DBR undertakes condition surveys, investigative inspections and conservation trials to inform the repair and restoration of historic buildings and monuments. Our experienced survey teams combine traditional conservation expertise with modern technology to provide detailed assessments of building fabric, structural condition and material performance.

DBR carries out drone surveys of historic roofs and façades using CAA-approved pilots who are also trained stone and roofing technicians, allowing close inspection of inaccessible areas while minimising the need for intrusive access. Surveys are supported by high-resolution photography, condition mapping, defect analysis and comprehensive reporting to assist clients, consultants and heritage stakeholders in developing appropriate conservation strategies.

Our experience includes condition surveys, investigative inspections and conservation trials at some of the UK's most significant heritage assets. At the Natural History Museum, DBR undertook investigative surveys and trial works to inform major conservation and refurbishment programmes. DBR has also carried out detailed masonry inspections at Victoria Tower within the Parliamentary Estate, including high-level investigations following reports of falling masonry, supported by condition reporting and recommendations for remedial works. At One Derby Gate, DBR undertook comprehensive surveys of historic interiors, including invasive and non invasive investigations, cataloguing dismantled elements and developing repair specifications in collaboration with the design team. At the Victoria & Albert Museum, DBR's conservation specialists assessed the condition of both the historic Sgraffito façade and the renowned Majolica ceramic façades, undertaking detailed investigations to inform conservation strategies and long-term preservation of these nationally significant decorative surfaces.

DBR provides technical and craft expertise to carry out targeted material and workmanship trials including historic fabric visual and intrusive  inspections, comprehensive building condition surveys including Ground Penetrating Radar, Thermography and embedded metal detection, along with cleaning and repair trials. From these surveys DBR will provide Condition Reports and Treatment Proposals to help support informed conservation decisions, Listed Building Applications, specification production, cost planning and successful project delivery.
