Nelson's Column

Restoration

Trafalgar square

1 / 5

Rising 185 feet above Trafalgar Square, Nelson’s Column is one of London’s most recognisable landmarks. Nelson’s Column is not only a defining feature of Trafalgar Square, but a complex structure set within one of London’s busiest public spaces. DBR London was appointed to carry out a full inspection and programme of routine maintenance to the monument, including Admiral Nelson’s statue and the iconic Landseer Lions at its base. Working on a structure of this scale demanded technical expertise, careful planning, and respect for one of the capital’s most significant historic symbols.

Reaching the Monument and Craft at Height

Accessing the upper reaches of the column required specialist equipment and experience. Using an 85-metre cherry picker, DBR’s team inspected the monument in its entirety, reaching the statue at the summit and examining every level along the way. This close inspection informed the scope of maintenance works, ensuring that interventions were targeted, appropriate, and minimal.

DBR undertook conservation and repair works to the statue of Admiral Nelson and the column beneath. Delicate sculpted masonry indents were carefully installed, while the column shaft was cleaned and re-pointed where required. Bronze conservation works were carried out to the acanthus leaves of the Corinthian capital, which were gently cleaned, repaired, and re-coated with specialist conservation lacquers.

The four bronze bas-relief panels were also cleaned and conserved, then protected with a hot wax coating. At ground level, similar masonry repairs were carried out to the stone base of the column. The four Landseer Lions were cleaned, locally re-patinated, and hot-waxed, restoring depth and definition to these iconic figures.

Stripping Back the City

Years of exposure to pollution and bird activity had left layers of pigeon guano and surface dirt across both stone and bronze surfaces. These deposits were carefully removed by hand to reveal the underlying materials and prepare the monument for conservation. Existing pigeon deterrents were temporarily removed to allow access for cleaning and repair, then reinstated once works were complete.

DBR inspects historic structures through binocular and close specialist surveys to reveal hidden defects like cracking, frosting, and metal corrosion. Mobile platforms enable access to high‑level details, while DBR coordinates all logistics, road closures, weekend work, and ground assessments, managing permissions and liaising with authorities to ensure safe, effective investigations.

A Monument Watched Over

Through bespoke access design, skilled conservation, detailed inspections, and ongoing maintenance, DBR continues to play a key role in safeguarding Nelson’s Column. High above Trafalgar Square, the monument stands not only as a symbol of national history, but as an example of careful stewardship, maintained, monitored, and protected so it can endure the demands of time, environment, and public life.
