Damaged Cantilever Stone Treads

DBR is currently delivering an ongoing programme of enabling and preparatory works for the careful repair and partial renewal of a cantilever stone staircase. The project involves a highly sequenced methodology designed to ensure structural stability at every stage, with temporary works, access solutions, and controlled dismantling forming the foundation of the operation prior to any permanent reinstatement.

Temporary works, access and structural stabilisation

The initial phase of the project focuses on detailed temporary works design, including the development of structural supports and access arrangements to safely facilitate the removal and reinstatement sequence. Temporary propping is being installed to support adjacent structural elements, ensuring stability throughout the works. In parallel, scaffolding and lifting systems are being established to provide safe access for operatives and controlled handling of materials within the confined working environment.

Careful dismantling and controlled removal

With temporary stabilisation in place, existing finishes are being carefully stripped back, including carpets and skirtings, to expose the underlying structure. Original banisters and railings are being methodically removed and securely stored for later reinstatement. Selective chasing of brickwork around the stair treads is then undertaken to facilitate the safe extraction of existing stone elements, ensuring minimal disturbance to surrounding fabric.

Stair removal, protection and replacement strategy

The existing stone stair components are carefully removed in a controlled sequence, with adjacent walls temporarily propped to maintain stability. Temporary supports are retained as required throughout this phase before being systematically dismantled once structural conditions allow. The replacement scope includes the supply of approximately ten new stone steps, carefully selected to match the original material and intended to reinstate both form and function of the staircase.

Reinstatement, finishing and architectural repair

Once new stone elements are installed, the staircase is reinstated with precise alignment and bedding, supported by temporary propping where necessary. Joints are carefully grouted to achieve a durable and visually consistent finish. Associated brickwork disturbed during the works is made good and repointed to match existing conditions. The final phase includes full refinishing and decoration to integrate repaired areas seamlessly, followed by the reinstatement of original railings in their historic positions, completing the carefully managed sequence of works.
