The works commenced with the careful mapping of the entire floor, setting out each individual stone to understand the original pattern and composition before any disturbance. Around 400 stones were then progressively lifted and catalogued, each one recorded as part of a developing archive of the existing fabric.
As lifting continued, salvaged stones were palletised and sent for resurfacing at the banker shop. The sand substrate has been removed and disposed of in phases, exposing the base build-up. Marine plywood is being installed over the existing floorboards to strengthen the formation for the new laying works, while the original boards remain in place and untouched.
Recovered stones are currently undergoing cleaning and resurfacing, with approximately 200 suitable pieces being brought back to a 120-grit finish. Damaged stones are being assessed for repair, including potential pinning works. Alongside this, replacement stone quantities are being confirmed, samples are being reviewed, and a cutting schedule is being developed. A relaying strategy is being tested and refined through sample layouts at Erith Yard for approval.
With planning and approvals progressing, salvaged and new stone will be laid together on a 50mm lime mortar bed, forming the reinstated floor in carefully controlled phases. The large front door threshold stone is also being repaired in situ as part of the ongoing works, maintaining continuity at the key point of entry.
Once all elements are fully reinstated, the floor will be sealed with an appropriate protective product. For now, however, the work continues as a staged process of recovery, repair, and reconstruction, gradually bringing the floor back into a unified whole.
