Façade Conservation

1 / 2

At University College School, a Grade II listed Edwardian Baroque building designed by Arnold Mitchell and constructed by Dove Brothers, DBR has delivered an ongoing programme of specialist masonry conservation for over 15 years. The school’s historic fabric, comprising three interconnected blocks built from distinctive Ham Hill stone with red brick detailing and gauged brick tympanums, has been carefully restored to preserve the architect’s original vision.

Restoring historic stonework and structural fabric

DBR’s masonry teams have undertaken extensive stone replacement using carefully sourced Ham Hill stone from the original Somerset quarry, ensuring a seamless match with the existing historic fabric. The works have also included the rebuilding and replacement of gauged brick arches and stock brick parapets, alongside the removal of deteriorated steel lintels and the reconstruction of failing clinker concrete floors. This considered approach has ensured that all repairs remain sympathetic to the original materials and craftsmanship of the building.

Ucs 3

Traditional craftsmanship with specialist leadwork

The conservation programme has combined traditional masonry expertise with specialist leadwork to provide long-term protection to newly restored areas. DBR Leadwork carried out the installation and replacement of lead coverings to all areas of replacement stonework, ensuring vulnerable details remain protected from weathering while maintaining the historic character of the building.

Ucs 2

Delivering sensitive conservation with minimal disruption

Given the school’s continued use as a live educational environment, all works were carefully planned around Easter and Summer holiday periods to minimise disruption to teaching and day-to-day activities. Through close collaboration with the school and a commitment to authentic materials and traditional craftsmanship, DBR has successfully safeguarded University College School’s unique architectural heritage for future generations.
