At the ceremonial heart of the capital, Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square unfolded as places of gathering, protest, remembrance, and celebration. Framed by monuments, statues, and historic buildings, these spaces carried not only architectural significance but symbolic weight stages upon which the life of the nation was often played out.
For more than a decade, DBR Limited has quietly served as steward to this fabric under a Measured Term Contract, undertaking continuous cleaning, repair, and conservation to ensure that these internationally recognised spaces remain both safe and dignified.
The work ranged across every surface touched by time and use. York stone paving was repaired or replaced where worn, with open joints carefully repointed and new stone indents inserted to match the original material in colour and texture. Granite walls in Trafalgar Square and the Portland stone features of Parliament Square were stabilised and repaired, preserving both their structural integrity and visual presence.
Alongside this, statues, bronze features, paving, and historic street furniture were cleaned using sensitive methods, while graffiti was removed swiftly to maintain the character of the squares without damaging the underlying surfaces.
One of the most demanding tasks involved Nelson’s Column, rising 185 feet above the square. Using an 85-metre cherry picker, DBR’s conservation team conducted a full inspection before undertaking detailed cleaning and repair to the column, the statue of Admiral Nelson, and the four great bronze lions at its base, sculpted by Sir Edwin Landseer.
Accumulated dirt and pigeon guano were removed using non-abrasive techniques, revealing the surfaces beneath without causing harm. Existing pigeon deterrents were temporarily removed during the works, then reinstated afterward to provide ongoing protection while preserving the monument’s appearance.
Elsewhere across Parliament Square, continuous and emergency maintenance ensured that sculptures and masonry elements remained stable despite heavy use and environmental exposure. In Trafalgar Square, paving repairs extended even to the broad steps leading to the National Portrait Gallery, where large stone courses were carefully relaid to maintain safety and continuity.
Bronze features and historic street furniture also received regular conservation attention, treated with methods that prioritised minimal intervention and long-term durability.
Unlike one-off restoration projects, this work had no clear beginning or end. It was cyclical, responsive, and ongoing, addressing wear as it occurred and preventing small issues from becoming larger ones. The aim was not transformation, but continuity.
Through this sustained programme of care, DBR has helped ensure that Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square remain worthy of their roles as London’s most visible public spaces. Their monuments continue to stand proud, their paving remains serviceable, and their historic character endures, maintained not by grand gestures, but by constant, skilled attention behind the scenes.
