Roofing and Façade Restoration

1 / 2

High above a historic residential building, DBR Leadwork took on the challenge of delivering a full roofing package over occupied luxury apartments. The structure beneath us was not only architecturally significant but also lived‑in, meaning every decision had to balance heritage care with the comfort and safety of the residents below. An extensively designed temporary roof sheltered the entire programme, creating a controlled environment where craftsmanship could thrive without disrupting daily life inside the building.

Peeling Back the Layers

The first task was to remove the existing asphalt roof covering, a process that revealed the building’s age and the need for a modern, resilient solution. The new roof build‑up was designed to meet today’s performance standards, incorporating cut‑to‑falls insulation and a full IKO asphalt system. The asphalt was laid over a new metal decking system, complete with a separating vapour control barrier and bitumen sheathing felt, ensuring long‑term durability and weather protection.

As the new roof took shape, DBR’s stonemasons worked in tandem with the leadwork team. New code 5 flashings were installed to the masonry parapets and asphalt abutments, with every chase carefully cut out and pointed by hand. The collaboration between trades brought a seamless finish to the junctions where stone and metal meet, one of the defining features of traditional London roofscapes.

Craftsmanship on Every Elevation

Beyond the roof itself, DBR teams turned their attention to the building’s external façade. Years of weathering were gently lifted away through specialist cleaning, revealing the original character of the masonry beneath. Restoration works followed, breathing new life into stone, brick, and decorative elements that had dulled over time.

Leadwork also played a central role in the project’s transformation. Remedial and new lead roofing installations were carried out across the building, supported by carefully prepared timber substrates. Each section was shaped, bossed, and fixed with the precision required for a building of this calibre.

Working Above Homes, With Care and Consideration

Throughout the project, the apartments below remained occupied. This demanded a level of planning and sensitivity that shaped every aspect of the works. The temporary roof allowed us to control noise, dust, and weather exposure, while logistics were carefully timed to minimise disruption. Communication with residents and building management ensured that the project progressed smoothly, safely, and respectfully.

A Roof Reborn

By the time the scaffolding came down, the building’s roofline had been completely renewed, technically robust, visually refined, and ready to protect the historic structure for decades to come. The façade gleamed once again, and the leadwork stood proudly as a testament to traditional craftsmanship executed with modern precision.

This project reflects DBR’s commitment to excellence in heritage roofing, façade restoration, and sensitive working practices, delivering high‑quality results even in the most challenging live environments.
