St. Mary's Hospital Paddington, Lewis Carrol Majolica Panels

The original block of St Mary’s Hospital in Norfolk Place was designed by Thomas Hopper in the classical style.

It first opened its doors to patients in 1851, the last of the great voluntary hospitals to be founded. During refurbishment of the children ward twelve majolica wall panels were uncovered which depicted scenes from Lewis Carrols Alice in Wonderland. These unique majolica panels were carefully recorded by DBR Conservators and condition reports produced for each panel. One panel was selected for careful removal and this was represented in the kitchen area of the newly refurbished children’s ward. Conservation repair was undertaken to the represented panel including retouching decorative elements.
