DBR is proud to be principal contractor in Blenheim Palace’s roof restoration—the largest conservation project undertaken at the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 300 years. The works encompass vital roof repairs, insulation improvements, and conservation of historic interiors and masonry, ensuring the long-term preservation of this architectural masterpiece.

The project includes the renewal of slate and lead roofs, as well as essential upgrades to lead gutters, rooflights, access hatches, and rainwater drainage systems. Insulation proposals are being carefully developed using vapour-permeable materials, tailored to the specific needs of the site. In the Great Hall and Saloon, insulation solutions will prioritise the conservation of the historic ceiling paintings, supported by specialist environmental modelling and ongoing monitoring.

The installation of safety decks for roof repairs presents a rare opportunity to conduct in-depth conservation work on the iconic ceiling and wall paintings of the Great Hall and Saloon. This access will allow specialists to examine, stabilise, and preserve these historic artworks, ensuring their continued legacy.

A comprehensive masonry conservation programme is being undertaken. High-priority areas include the north and south porticos, the masonry above the new north portico lift, and the roofscape parapets, chimneys, and high-level stonework of the Great Hall. Sensitive cleaning trials, including poulticing and laser cleaning, will be conducted to carefully remove sulphation crusts and contaminants while preserving Blenheim’s distinctive patina.

The historic windows of the Great Hall and Saloon are in a deteriorated state. All require repair to ensure their long-term stability and function within the historic fabric of the palace.

This landmark conservation project reflects DBR’s commitment to the highest standards of heritage restoration, blending traditional craftsmanship with innovative conservation techniques to protect Blenheim Palace for generations to come.
