The sculpture received a gentle steam cleaning and of surrounding paving using the DOFF system, to remove biological growth, dirt, and atmospheric soiling without damaging the substrate.
Localised repairs were undertaken to the Portland stone elements, including the removal of failed mortar and repointing with a lime-based mix compatible with the historic fabric.
A damaged Portland paving slab was carefully removed and replaced in kind, bedded on a suitable mortar to match existing levels and appearance.
Indent Repairs to Stone Riser Where the Portland stone riser had suffered mechanical damage, a new stone indent was prepared and inserted to restore the profile and visual integrity.
The bronze sculpture was meticulously cleaned and areas of damaged patina were harmonised using traditional cold patination techniques and tinted waxes to match the surrounding finish. A full application of wax was then applied across the sculpture, with the final coat hand-buffed to achieve a consistent sheen and protective finish.
The granite plaque inscription was re-gilded to restore its prominence and ensure legibility, honouring the memory and intent of the original dedication.
This sensitive programme of works was carried out with the utmost care and respect for the memorial’s significance, employing best-practice conservation techniques throughout. The completed project ensures that ‘Sorrowful’ remains a poignant and well-maintained site of remembrance within one of London’s most historically resonant green spaces.
