Before work began, full floor protection was carefully installed and a tall access tower erected within the Chapel. This allowed safe access to the ceiling, where cleaning and the restoration of historic paintwork could proceed without disturbing the space below.
The ceiling was gently cleaned and its painted surfaces restored, while timber dado panels were repaired and re-polished, their finish renewed without losing the softness of age. Nearby, the Princess Louise Angel memorial was carefully steam cleaned under controlled conditions, ensuring the delicate gilding remained undisturbed.
At the heart of the works stood the Oppy Cross, a wooden battlefield marker dating from 1917, mounted on a column above a memorial name board. Its repair and conservation formed one of the most significant elements of the project, carried out with restraint and deep respect for its origin and meaning.
New lighting was installed to support the renewed interior, and the floor was cleaned as the project drew to a close. The Chapel was returned in time for a memorial service marking the start of the First World War on 4 August 2014, ready once again to receive reflection and remembrance.
