Stone Craftsmanship

DBR was commissioned to construct a new Portland stone plinth and surrounding landscape features for the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Parliament Square, Westminster. The project required a carefully considered approach to material selection and craftsmanship, with detailed workshop drawings produced, stone samples submitted for approval, and a visit undertaken to the quarry to personally select the most suitable Portland stone for the works.

Careful preparation and structural works

The project commenced with the erection of a scaffold frame to facilitate the safe lifting and positioning of the heavy stone components. Existing planters and surrounding paving were carefully dismantled, with original stonework set aside where appropriate. New foundations were then formed in accordance with the structural engineer’s specifications, creating a stable and durable base for the new stone installation.

Following delivery to site, the newly crafted Portland stone elements were carefully lifted into position and installed to form the plinth, access steps, and two new stone planters surrounding the statue. Through skilled stonemasonry, precise detailing, and careful coordination, DBR delivered a high-quality enhancement to the setting of the Gandhi statue, ensuring a fitting and enduring memorial within the historic landscape of Parliament Square.
