At 13–15 Old Square, within the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, the building carried on its daily life throughout the works. Lawyers and barristers passed through its doors each day, while residents continued to call it home. The challenge was clear: conservation had to unfold without interrupting the life within.
DBR’s work began with the design and installation of specialist scaffolding, complete with a fully watertight UBIX roof to protect the building throughout the programme. DOFF cleaning gently refreshed historic surfaces, while handmade specialist carved bricks were produced to replace failed units in the chimney stacks. Leadwork and Westmorland slate were fully renewed, new roof access ladders installed, and Cintec stabilisation discreetly strengthened the gables. Stacks and gables were carefully dismantled and rebuilt, with windows repaired and redecorated to complete the external envelope.
To keep the project moving smoothly, a full-time site foreman liaised daily with Chambers, ensuring works aligned with the building’s professional and residential needs. Before work began, DBR hosted informal ‘drop-in’ sessions with Chambers, allowing concerns to be discussed openly and building strong relationships with occupants and tenants from the outset.
With up to 40 operatives on site at peak periods, sequencing was critical. Trades were carefully coordinated to avoid clashes, maintain safety, and minimise disruption. Through planning, communication, and restraint, a complex programme of works was delivered within a fully occupied and working Inn quietly restoring the building while life inside continued uninterrupted.
