Eltham Palace

Rotunda Re-Roofing

Eltham Palace is a place where medieval grandeur and 1930s glamour coexist, its architecture and interiors drawing visitors from around the world. At the heart of this unique site lies the grand entrance, a sweeping, elegant approach that has welcomed royalty, dignitaries, and guests for centuries. Its historic asphalt roof, however, had reached the end of its life and required careful renewal to protect the structure beneath.

A Complex Roof With No Room for Error

The configuration of the building meant that a temporary scaffold roof, normally essential for weather protection, was impossible to install. This constraint shaped the entire methodology. DBR’s team had to work in small, controlled sections, removing the old asphalt and relaying the new covering within the same day, ensuring the palace remained watertight at all times. Every decision had to account for changing weather, visitor flow, and the building’s delicate historic fabric.

Working Above a Live, Busy Palace

Throughout the works, Eltham Palace remained fully operational. Visitors explored the site daily, and the venue continued to host weddings, conferences, and events. DBR’s team coordinated closely with English Heritage staff to ensure that noise, access, and safety were managed seamlessly. The project progressed without complaint, an achievement made possible through careful planning, respectful working practices, and a deep understanding of how to operate within a live heritage environment.

A New Roof Built to Last

The renewed roof was constructed using 20mm asphalt laid over a vapour control barrier, providing a robust and long‑lasting waterproof layer. New code 5 lead flashings were installed to protect junctions and edges, ensuring the system performs reliably for decades to come. Any depressions or irregularities in the substrate were corrected with additional asphalt coatings, creating a smooth, even finish that honours the building’s architectural quality.
