Conservation & Repairs

1 / 3

Some conservation projects are about repairing what has deteriorated. Others are about protecting the stories that have survived for generations. For this project, DBR Conservators was appointed to carefully conserve and restore a historic ornamental structure, balancing specialist craftsmanship with modern conservation techniques. Every intervention was carried out with respect for the original fabric, ensuring the structure retained its historic character while remaining protected for years to come.

Stripping Back with Care

Every successful conservation project begins with understanding what should be preserved and what has reached the end of its life. Existing wire mesh, roof sheeting and redundant steel elements were carefully dismantled and removed using methods specifically selected to avoid unnecessary damage to the historic structure. Temporary weather protection remained in place throughout the works, safeguarding the asset while restoration progressed. New galvanised steel support rings were fabricated and installed, while existing gates were overhauled, adjusted and fitted with new hardware to restore smooth operation without compromising their original appearance. Throughout the dismantling process, every exposed steel cut was immediately protected with specialist zinc-rich primer, ensuring long-term corrosion resistance from the very first stage of the project.

Giving the Roof a New Lease of Life

With the original roof carefully removed, attention turned to creating a durable replacement that respected the historic design. New clear cast acrylic roof panels were precisely fabricated and installed to match the existing roof geometry, complete with new aluminium glazing bars and solvent-welded joints to create a clean, seamless finish. Before the new roof was installed, the supporting steelwork, including columns, brackets, ring beams and radial rafters, was thoroughly prepared and recoated using a specialist protective paint system designed for long-term durability. Decorative gold detailing was reinstated to the roof finial and architectural highlights, restoring the character that makes the structure instantly recognisable.

Protecting the Ironwork for the Future

The conservation extended beyond structural repairs to the complete restoration of the decorative metalwork. Columns, capitals, railings and gates were carefully prepared, primed and repainted using a high-performance protective coating system suitable for exposed environments. Ornamental details received hand-finished gold decoration, bringing depth and definition back to the architectural features while remaining faithful to the original design. The result is a finish that not only enhances the structure visually but also provides lasting protection against the elements.

Conserving the Heart of the Structure

At the centre of the enclosure stood one of the project's most delicate elements, a historic oak stump surrounded by intricately carved and painted figures. Working with specialist conservation techniques, DBR Conservators gently cleaned the timber using non-invasive methods to reveal hidden detail without damaging historic finishes. Each carved figure was individually inspected to assess its condition, previous repairs, paint layers and structural stability. Where required, timber carvings were carefully consolidated, weakened fixings replaced with stainless steel components, and vulnerable paint layers stabilised using conservation-grade materials. Small defects were repaired before every figure was meticulously retouched with artists' oil paints, matching the existing colours, patterns and character to preserve the original artistic intent.

Conservation is about more than restoration, it is about ensuring historic places continue to tell their stories. The completed works have secured the future of this unique heritage asset while respecting the craftsmanship and history that made it worth preserving in the first place.
