Alexandra Palace

Various works

1 / 4

Alexandra Palace, affectionately known as “Ally Pally”, has been a centre of public entertainment, recreation, and culture since it first opened in 1873. Designed by John Johnson and Alfred Meeson as North London’s answer to the Crystal Palace, it was envisioned as a grand civic space where people could gather, learn, and be inspired. Just sixteen days after opening, a devastating fire destroyed much of the building. By 1875, Johnson had rebuilt it, giving the palace the form that still dominates the skyline today.

A Historic Façade Ready for Renewal

DBR was commissioned to undertake a comprehensive programme of external conservation works to protect and enhance the palace’s distinctive Victorian architecture. The project centred on the cleaning, repair, and re‑pointing of the bath stone and brickwork façades, materials that had weathered decades of London’s climate and pollution. Before any work began, windows, doors, and external features were carefully protected to ensure the palace’s historic fabric remained unharmed throughout the process.

Repairing, Strengthening, and Rebuilding

The conservation works extended beyond surface cleaning. DBR carried out targeted demolition and reconstruction of concrete slabs and lintels where deterioration had compromised structural integrity. Cintec anchors were inserted to stabilise vulnerable areas, providing discreet reinforcement while preserving the building’s appearance. Roof repairs and drainage improvements were also undertaken, including the renewal of roof lights to ensure the palace remains watertight and resilient.

Scaffolding Designed for a Landmark

Given the scale and complexity of Alexandra Palace, DBR London erected a bespoke scaffold system tailored to the building’s unique geometry. This allowed conservators and masons to access every part of the façade safely and efficiently, ensuring that the works could be carried out to the highest standard without disrupting the palace’s ongoing public use.
