Recently, we were delighted to host a Heritage Skills Taster Day at our Heritage Education Centre, located within the beautiful South Downs National Park. The event welcomed students from Brighton College and Chichester College, representatives from the Sussex Heritage Trust, and a young aspiring craftsperson who attended with his father, all eager to explore careers in heritage conservation and historic building restoration.

Throughout the day, participants had the opportunity to learn directly from our experienced craftspeople, taking part in practical workshops that showcased the specialist skills required to conserve and restore historic buildings.

Workshops included:

  • Masonry
  • Brickwork & Stonework
  • Leadwork & Roofing
  • Letter Cutting

Each session provided valuable insight into the craftsmanship, precision, and attention to detail that underpin the conservation of the UK's architectural heritage. From working with traditional materials to understanding historic construction techniques, attendees experienced first-hand what it means to work in the heritage construction industry.

As the demand for skilled heritage professionals continues to grow, introducing young people to traditional building crafts has never been more important. Events like our Heritage Skills Taster Day help bridge the gap between education and industry, giving students the opportunity to discover rewarding careers in historic building conservation, restoration, and specialist construction.

It was fantastic to see such enthusiasm and curiosity throughout the day. The willingness of participants to embrace new skills and ask thoughtful questions demonstrated just how much interest there is in preserving the UK's historic environment for future generations.

We would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to making the event such a success, including the students, educators, and representatives from the Sussex Heritage Trust. Their support helps strengthen the future of the heritage industry and inspires the next generation of conservation professionals.

We look forward to hosting many more events at our Heritage Education Centre, welcoming schools, colleges, universities, and industry partners to discover the rewarding world of heritage skills, historic building restoration, and building conservation.
