The buildings, fountains and colonnades of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich have been decorated with a series of large 19th century lanterns – also referred to as The Lanterns Of ORNC. The handcrafted lanterns feature unique royal and maritime symbols such as crowns, mermen and anchors, and are in various states of disrepair.

DBR Conservation is responsible for working with the architect on condition surveys and providing tailored conservation solutions for each lantern.

This involves removing all the old decayed paintwork, accumulated detritus and inappropriate Perspex panels, providing essential metal conservation work, refitting new individually made curved glass panels, applying protective coatings of zinc phosphate paint, and redecorating with Deep Bronze Green paint.

The lantern’s historically gold features are then regilded to complete the restoration of these glorious objects.
