NHM Waterhouse Façade

The Natural History Museum is a Grade I listed Victorian building. The museum is considered one of the greatest Victorian museums of the 19th century. DBR are carrying out a complete conservation undertaking to the famed Waterhouse facade. Including masonry conservation and conservation laser cleaning package.

The project incorporated an innovative design of a rolling scaffolding. This system is unique to this project that allows DBR’s skilled team to work on one section of the facade at a time without disrupting the visual impact of the facade.

Our team is carefully cleaning the terracotta façade, using sensitive techniques to remove grime while preserving its intricate details. After assessing conditions, we are repairing fixing points and restoring damaged areas through traditional craftsmanship, seamlessly blending repairs with the original design.

We are also restoring the building’s iconic large-format windows, including cast and wrought iron frames and stained glass. This involves repairing or replacing mastic, putty, and broken panes, repainting frames, and cleaning glass to a high standard. Internal protection ensures minimal disruption, and security measures safeguard specific areas throughout the works.

The rainwater goods, including cast iron hopper heads and downpipes, are being restored or replaced to meet the highest conservation standards. We are carefully maintaining their historical integrity while improving functionality across all elevations.

DBR Conservators are carrying out an immense laser cleaning package to carved and decorative terracotta across the facade, The laser cleaning method Removes unwanted layers of sulfation and deposits from historic substrates without penetrating or damaging historic fabric.

This project is delivered in phases over multiple years, with a strong focus on safety and risk management. By combining technical skill with respect for the building’s heritage, DBR ensures this landmark is preserved for future generations.
